How To Build A Minimal Wardrobe And Follow A Low Buy Lifestyle

minimal wardrobe-low buy year

Even before I get into this post let me put out a disclaimer that I am not a fashion blogger so this post won’t be diving deep into fashion looks and none of the tips I am mentioning here are brand new unheard-of things. These are tips from our middle-class family upbringing that got lost somewhere along the way with the entry of fast fashion and an increase in family income.

Take this post as a reminder. A nudge to consider going back to how we grew up with fewer resources but happy hearts. A return to a healthy lifestyle and non-consumerism. We have been sold the luxe lifestyle for a while now, and maybe like me, you are ready to reject it for simpler pleasures in life. Yes, we buy, but we buy more wisely. We buy what is needed and with regard for the planet.

Okay, are you with me?

Lets get started,

Here is how you can build and maintain a minimal wardrobe that lasts a long time and remains stylish throughout the years.

Tips To Build A Minimal Wardrobe That Lasts You A Long Time

1. Invest in classic pieces

When you buy look for outfits that are fashionable regardless of what’s trending currently. Classic pieces like navy blue straight fit jeans, a white button shirt, a black tee, a well fitted black/white dress, black pumps look stylish on most body types, and bring an instant chic touch with little dressing up or down.

2. Know your body type and what suits you

It is very important to dress for your body type to look well put together at all times. Use this post to know what body type you are and what type of outfits suit your body the most. That said, each of us has an individual style. For me its collared outfits and long tunic tops paired with jeans.

Similarly, you too may have a few personal favorite styles of clothing that you know suits you. Invest in finding the best fits and brands when choosing these personal favorites, because you will be wearing them the most.

3. Buy staple pieces in black, white, nude and metallic colors

For things like bags, shoes, belts, and wallets/clutches I like to stick to black, white, nude, and gold or silver. At any given point depending on the type of outfits in my wardrobe, I will buy a pair of shoes in black, nude, and gold for example, to best suit every outfit in my wardrobe.

I used to buy fun quirky shoes and bags when I was younger. But those got used rarely and stayed in my wardrobe unused for a long time and then wore off. After wasting my hard-earned money on such purchases that I used only 2-3 times I made a conscious effort to go with basic colors like black, white, nude, and metallics that I can easily pair with most outfits.

For example, I now own fewer shoes (only 6 pairs, there was a time I had more than 50 pairs of shoes in different styles and colors!! )

Alongside this, I also make sure to buy the most practical and comfortable style in bags and shoes. No more ridiculously sky-high heels that I use only once a year at a 1-hour long party. There are more sneakers, flat sandals, and chic 4-inch heels in my current minimal shoe collection.

4. Declutter your wardrobe and resell what doesn’t fit

From time to time even as you maintain a minimal closet, you will need to assess your collection. You may now have a few pieces that don’t fit anymore or ones that wear out to a point of no return.

Read this post to understand how you can declutter your wardrobe in one day.

Assess your wardrobe every 6 months to evaluate what pieces you are no longer reaching for, or that need to be binned. The ones you do not fancy anymore or don’t fit you can be passed on to someone else. If you don’t personally know of anyone find local organizations that deal in reselling or clothes swaps. Check Facebook to find out what is nearest to you.

5. Swap clothes with friends and accept hand me downs

Organize clothes swaps with your friends or accept hand me downs from family and friends. I know many look down upon wearing used clothing, but if the outfit is still as good as new and something that suits your style, why not? Think of how helpful it is to the environment by you using that outfit some more instead of someone discarding a perfectly wearable piece of clothing.

6. Reuse old outfits and sarees

Our middle-class moms and grandmas did this. Throughout my childhood, my mom made my skirts and dresses from leftover stitching material or old sarees.

Remember how our moms made pillow covers/ chair covers with left over dress materials? It was one of the most ingenious ways an Indian woman made use of whatever resources she had to make something completely new.  You cannot get more eco-friendly than an Indian mom. Taking a leaf out of my mom’s book, recently I have gone back to sourcing my grandmother’s old sarees, to make me new salwar kameez and dresses.

Similarly, in order to use my wedding lehenga again, I stitched a new blouse in a different style to pair with the lehenga and the entire outfit looked brand new. Go through your old sarees or Indian party wear that haven’t been used in a while and try and build new outfits using these as your base material.

7. Invest in good quality clothing

Buy good quality. Sometimes this means spending more, but these outfits are going to last you a very long time, so you might as well invest in good quality pieces.

Categories I like to spend more on and ensure I am getting my money’s worth are :

Winter wear (Buy classic styled cardigans, sweaters, long comfy woven tunics.) My winter wear collection is still holding up strong 6 years down the line. I haven’t bought a single new piece of winter clothing all this while.

Shoes (especially sneakers and comfy sandals)

Jeans (choose dark colors and classic fits)

Where to buy?

In all honesty, I buy mainly from high street fashion brands like Zara, Marks and Spencers, H&M, Esprit, Gap, and Old Navy. And even though many consider fast fashion as poor quality clothing I find that if you choose wisely when you shop there are many pieces that last for years. You need to look for thick materials and good weave on the material when you choose.

I cannot yet afford to buy every piece in my wardrobe from sustainable fashion labels. But I feel by reducing the number of times I shop in a year to about 2-3 times a year and then using the clothes for a long time I am reducing demand from my side for fast fashion.

Growing up we bought new clothes 2 times a year, one on our birthday and one for our New Year festival. And we used those clothes until they wore off or didn’t fit anymore. My mom used to check every piece of clothing very closely when she had to make a purchase. She wanted to make sure that the material would last for a long time and not wear off in 2-3 washes. I definitely inherited my mom’s keen eye for material because I don’t pick clothes because they are cute, they have to be cute but long-lasting.

That said I do buy from sustainable brands when I can. Some of my favorite sustainable fashion brands in India are No Nasties, Fab India, and Nicobar by GoodEarth.

Last year I aimed for a low buy year and was quite successful in keeping the number of items on my shopping list to under 10. Coming from a background of mindless shopping the low buy year felt like a big change. I plan to continue on my efforts to buying wisely and only when in need.

Another point I want to add here is that buying mindfully does not mean you have to forgo your love for fashion. You can still buy pieces that are unique and fashionable. Just that you won’t be buying 10 of them but only 1-2 at a time.

If anything a low buy year will make you aware of mindless spending and push you to invest your time and energies into other pursuits that fill your life with more happiness and content.

I hope this post inspires you to buy less and build a minimal wardrobe. I don’t believe in living in extremes, so I won’t say don’t buy at all or only buy from thrift stores, etc. If this is possible for you, do go on. But for everyone else, a little mindfulness does go a long way in helping our planet and with each one of us participating we can change demand.

As they say, every drop makes an ocean. And every little effort contributes towards saving our planet.

Winter Capsule Wardrobe For Toddler Boy (18-24 month)

winter capsule wardrobe for kids

A winter capsule wardrobe is functional and fun to build. I first started building my son a capsule wardrobe when he was 6 month old. Those of you following my series in the past know I am a big fan of the trend. It saves me time as a mom and every look for my son is stylish and put together.

If you don’t know about capsule wardrobes they are basically wardrobes built with select pieces between 12-33 in number that can be styled together to give cohesive looks every time.

In the last capsule I stuck with neutral colors, this time I wanted to add some fun colors and prints. My son is growing up and is beginning to get excited about dressing himself. Bold colors and cute prints make the process fun for him. Though I love dinosaur, car and monster prints for boys. I don’t like to restrict his wardrobe choices to these specifc prints. You will see that his clothes are a mix of neutrals, few fun character prints and then some unique trendy pieces.

Winter Capsule Wardrobe Essentials

Before I get into the details of the clothes, I want to list what is needed for his 18-24 month capsule wardrobe.

Since he is on the tall and lean side, most of his 12-18 month tees and onesies still fit him quite well. Investing in good quality pieces helps with getting good use out of clothes in such cases. Carrying forward these pieces of clothes reduced a lot of shopping for me.

I like adding layers for styling my son in Indian winters. Especially through the transitional weather of October heat through to cold December and January months.

His wardrobe is a mix of lighter cotton tees, half sleeved and full sleeved tees, long sleeved onesies and shirts, jackets, short pants, denims, joggers etc. This way I can mix and match according to the weather and still have different looks for him.

Onesies

For the winter’s I stuck mostly with long sleeved onesies for Little A. Onesies are a great option for nightwear paired with loose pants. I bought my son 8 Onesies for the coming season. My go to brand for onesies is H&M, they have a line called Conscious clothing, that is an organic cotton line. H&M always runs deals on this collection like buy 2 get 1 free. A great option when you want to stock up for the coming season.

Mommy shopping tip: H&M has a rack at the back of the kids clothing section with “Clearance Pieces”. I always find good deals there. Be sure to check this rack the next time you shop at H&M. Some sets are priced as low as Rupees 350.

Tees

This time I didn’t buy a lot of tees as we have many in good condition from my last capsule. Also we get gifted tees from time to time. That’s why I bought 6 tees for the winter capsule wardrobe. The color palette was a mix of neutrals, whites and these two cute cartoon  tees I found on an Amazon.com sale.

Mommy shopping tip: First get yourself an Amazon prime, Firstcry.com and Hopscotch.com membership. Then keep an eye out for deals on kids clothing. I find some great deals on kids clothing on Amazon, both the cartoon tees were on flash sale, I bought them for less than Rupees 150. Sometimes brands like GAP and Mothercare go on flat 50% off too!!

Pants

Toddler years are rough on the clothes. We get a lot of wear out of pants. I bought Little A 7 pants – 2 shorts, 1 black denim, 4 jogger pants. This variety allows me to style different looks for him based on our activity for the day. For bottom wear I tend to stick with darker shades since they get dirty so quickly.
Mommy shopping tip: For clothes like pants that require frequent purchasing because of wear and tear I buy from export surplus clothing stores like MyFaktory. MyFaktory is a facebook group run by a mommyprenur that brings quality clothes from international brands at affordable prices. I shop here regularly for Little A and love the quality of the clothes and the fact that I am helping support another hard working mom.

Sweat Shirts

Layering with sweatshirts is one of my favorite styling look for my son. I bought 2 sweatshirts for the coming winters, they can be worn just as or with a shirt inside for a semi formal look.

Jackets

Where we live winters don’t get very cold, so I bought Little A one organic cotton winter jacket, one black denim shirt and another thick plaid shirt that can be used as outerwear. To get an idea on how I plan to style the sweatshirt and jackets for layered looks, you can check my post on autumn looks for toddler boys.

Occasion Wear

Winter Capsule Wardrobe - Occasion wear
This time I bought him one formal bow tie set and another simple organic cotton kurta as occasion wear. I also use shirt and denim as a semi formal look for Little A at birthday parties or smaller events. We have a few shirts gifted this time so didn’t buy any extras.

Socks

H&M organic cotton socks are my go to for my son, we have 6 pairs in white, blue and grey. Colors that can easily match any outfit.

Shoes

In the last capsule he had white sneakers. Since its winters I switched to dark coloured shoes. 1 pair of black shoes and 1 pair of brown boots.

Mom Fashion Guide: Tips To Build A Stylish Mommy Wardrobe

Mom fashion tips

I have always been interested in fashion and this didn’t change once I became a mommy. One of my favorite things growing up was subscribing to fashion magazines and making scrapbooks of my favorite fashion looks.

And though I love following fashion trends, I am not one who buys everything that is trending. I am aware of my body shape and buy pieces that suit my frame. My personal style is more chic and classic, with pieces that can be styled in a number of ways.

One look at Pinterest under the search terms mom fashion trends and you realize that moms these days are taking personal style seriously. Today women are living more out going lives and becoming a mommy is not looked at as a phase where you need to tone down your fashion sense. I personally didn’t buy any maternity clothes throughout my pregnancy and enjoyed wearing my regular clothes, as most of my style is anyway more relaxed and casual. Also, maternity brands are now making more stylish mom clothes and good-looking pieces in keeping with this new trend among women.

Post-baby, comfort does play an important role in choosing your outfits. Also if you are breastfeeding you need outfits that are easy to breastfeed in. Keeping these points in mind I altered my wardrobe a little post-baby. But overall I still wear similar type of clothes to I wore earlier. How you style your self becomes more important post-baby, rather than buying a lot of pieces and different trendy looks.

This post will focus on key pieces you need in your mommy wardrobe and how you can style them to look fashionable effortlessly.

Mom fashion tips-camisole top

Camisole/Tank Tops

If you are a breastfeeding mom, these become essential. Buy a few basic colors that come with a built-in removable clasp. This makes them easy to breastfeed in and to pair with other items in your wardrobe. I sometimes pair a button down shirt with a camisole for a relaxed and comfy look. Solid black and dark grey camisoles are must haves in your mommy wardrobe.

To give this regular look a twist, find a few tank tops with a racer back. These look so stylish and stand out compared to a boring camisole look.

Mom fashion Tips-Jacket and silk top

Outerwear

I am a little obsessed with layering. And as a mother, it is amazing to add another layer to your outfit to give you a little extra comfort on the go. No need to worry about your top pulling up or stretching in weird places as you go about playing with your kid.

You need three types of pieces to help layer:

  1. Denim Jacket/ Faux Leather Jacket
  2. Cardigan
  3. Long Shrug

Button Down Shirts

I was not a fan of shirts before I had a baby. Then breastfeeding happened, and I found them to be the most practical option to dress quickly and look put together at the same time. I like to pair them with a cute camisole, or thin tee and white sneakers to give it a sporty look.

Tees-Mom fashion tips

Tees

I buy different types of tees to keep my wardrobe interesting. Adding dressy tees with unique elements to them like cutout sleeves, peplum detail, embroidery etc. A dressy tee is easy to wear with jeans and give you a quick special occasion outfit.

vintage-jeans-mom fashion tips

Jeans

Mom jeans are now a fashion statement worldwide. When selecting jeans you need a comfortable cut, read no oopsy! moments when you bend to pick your child. High waisted jeans are the way to go. Buy a few in solid colors, that don’t show all those baby foods stain easily.

Leggings-mom fashion tips

Leggings

I don’t need to say more here. Moms live in leggings. They provide comfort and the new fashion trend is all about casual comfort.

I like to pair leggings with an oversized tee, a faux leather jacket and ankle length boots for a night out. Or if the weather is hot, wear the leggings with an oversized tee tying a knot to one side and pairing with sandals.

dresses-mom fashion tips

Dresses

Maxi dresses and shirtdresses are the best silhouettes in dresses for moms. They provide coverage and are super comfortable as you go about your day doing your mommy duties. I personally love maxi dresses, these especially look great on tall women.

bags-mom fashion tips

Bags

I am a huge lover of bags. I love to mix and match bags. My current diaper bag is a huge brown tote. Sometimes I use backpacks with funky prints as diaper bags too. I don’t strictly use diaper bags as a bag. I like to change it up with different totes I already own. For more on how to pack a diaper bag and to get your diaper bag checklist read here.

shoes- Mom fashion tips

Shoes

Flats are the way to go. If you are comfortable running behind your toddler in heels go for it. I can’t! But I don’t want to wear boring sandals and mommy shoes either. So I mix it up with different styles of flats and sneakers.

For dressy events, I wear ballet flats or sandals with shorter heels. Always great to have these in basic colors like black, nude and tan to match any outfit.

And for regular running around town type of days, I stick to sneakers and other cute flat sandals.

accessories-mom fashion tips

Accessories

To be honest I slack in this department. I am always running out the door and forget about putting my earrings on. But well thought out accessories make an outfit. Your dress can be simple but a great necklace or earrings can bring the outfit together.

I stick to having a collection of stud earrings and simple necklaces post-baby. But you can rock big neckpieces and chunky bracelets too. A unique or statement piece of jewelry just adds that dash of fun to your outfit.

occasion wear- mom fashion tips

Occasion Wear

I had a hard time finding Indian ethnic wear that was breastfeeding friendly and occasion worthy. Either they have a lot of sequin work on it that is not suited to my baby’s soft skin, or if made in chiffon or georgette material they looked more semi-casual.

Many women in India love to wear sarees, but in my case, I am not comfortable in them since I don’t wear them regularly. And when attending parties with my son I prefer comfort over style. If you are like me custom-made salwar kameez is an answer. Choose rich-looking materials like silks and satins to give your simple breastfeeding friendly salwar kameez a party look.

I love wearing dresses as occasion wear too. Kimono style dresses, and wrap dresses are easy to breastfeed in and add that special element to the dress that makes it look party wear. Pairing them with cute accessories makes them stylish mom outfits for any occasion.

How To Build A Toddler Capsule Wardrobe: Tips And Tricks

Toddler Capsule Wardrobe

Recently I did a post on how I built a toddler capsule wardrobe. It was followed by requests to do a post for a girls capsule wardrobe. Capsule wardrobe works on the simple idea that you choose limited pieces of clothing that can be easily mixed and matched. Reusing clothes over and over again yet looking refreshingly different with each combination.

This time around, I decided to do a post on tips on building a toddler capsule wardrobe. Be it girl or boy.

Points to consider before starting

Before you begin shopping for your toddler’s wardrobe you need to consider points like age, is your toddler home all day? or going to daycare/school? What does your toddler like wearing? his/her favorite color, your laundry routine and season of the year.

These points will help you decide on the perfect number and type of clothes needed for your situation.

Color Palette

Either opt for neutral colors or solid bold colors that can mix and match easily.

Prints

Choose a few key pieces like tees or leggings in prints of your choice. Just make sure that they can be matched with the rest of the wardrobe.

Bottom wear & Jackets

It’s best to stick to dark solid colors for jackets, pants, leggings, skirts and shorts. These colors don’t show stains easily. Black, navy, tan are great colors for bottom wear for both girls and boys. They can match with all the printed tees in the capsule.

Shoes

Black, navy and white shoes are best bets as they are easy to mix and match.

Material

Most important point here is to select sturdy and good quality materials. You want these limited items of clothes to last long. Don’t compromise on price if you know it’s a good quality clothing item that will last rough wear.

Accessories

Headbands, socks and other accessories can be where you can experiment with other quirky details in print since the rest of the wardrobe is going to match seamlessly. These quirky elements can be picked keeping in mind your child’s character.

Stick to a few select brands

Brands usually create collections of clothing with an assigned color palette. Coordinating pieces can be easily found within a brand’s collection. This will help you as a busy mom saving time and effort. You don’t have to go from shop to shop looking for different things to match your chosen color palette.

I did this when I shopped for my son. At the time, I liked that H&M had neutral colors as a running theme and GAP had some good basic clothes in solid colors. So I went with it and bought most of his wardrobe pieces from these stores.

Here is a sample girls capsule wardrobe to get an idea how a capsule looks like.

How I Built My Toddler’s Capsule Wardrobe

baby boy with hat covering face-capsule wardrobe for toddlers

When it comes to fashion I always had a more classic type of style. A classic and timeless wardrobe is easy to manage. You can mix and match different pieces to create new looks every time. I applied the same logic when it came to choosing pieces for my son.

We got a lot of gifted clothing to last us the initial few months. Being the frugal mama that I am, I didn’t bother buying more clothes for Little A. Infact he got his first proper sets of clothing from mom and dad at six months. We could easily manage with all the clothing that was gifted, filling in the gaps where needed.

Once the baby fashion department was in my hand, I was constantly trying my best to get my money’s worth and have something stylish for my son at the same time. I didn’t mind spending a little extra if the clothing item would last long.

It took me a while to research different baby clothing brands. At this stage in mommyhood, I know what I like and how to go about getting the best wardrobe for our son.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion and can be easily mixed and matched.

Usually one limits the number of items in your capsule wardrobe to 12-33.

The intention behind a capsule wardrobe is to buy less, own less and make use of clothing until it wears out.

If you think about it, kids clothing is a perfect fit for capsule wardrobes. They grow out of clothes pretty fast, so it makes sense to buy a few sturdy items that you get good wear out of.

How I went about it?

I started by building my son’s capsule wardrobe for the 12-18 month range. A six month range felt like a good starting point for the capsule. This period falls in the summer season in India [March-August], so the clothes had to be summer friendly.

I kept in mind my son’s build (he is on the tall and lean side) and any clothing gifts that we would get. We also carry forward a few clothes from 9-12 month range, since he is lean.

Another important point to note here is that I wash clothes every other day. I don’t have a specific day of the week to do my laundry, I prefer doing it alternate days. This helps me buy less and constantly rotate our clothes.

Color Scheme

I stuck to neutral colors like grey and brown, along with blue and white. These are versatile colors to create cohesive looks.

What does he wear?

For casual wear I dress him up in tees or onesies paired with pants. And for formal wear I either dress him up in shirts and trousers or kurta’s.

At home; I dress him in sleeveless vests, or light cotton onesies, along with few sets of pyjamas for nights. My favorite brands for light summer vests are Zero and Mothercare. Mothercare vests are especially good as they withstand my frequent washing routine.

Now come all the pictures!! You can see what I bought for my son and how I plan to team them.

Tees

Currently we have 10 short sleeve tees and 3 long sleeve tees for the next 6 months. Also, we do get clothing gifts from family time to time. Boys usually receive blue colored clothing as gifts. That’s why; it’s a smart idea to include a little bit of blue color to the capsule. I have selected the colors to be as neutral as possible adding a blue or yellow in the mix.

I like how onesie’s look on my little one. We have 6 onesies and each is a different style as you see in the picture. Again, 3 are full sleeved and 3 short sleeved.

It is good to have a few full sleeve options. They work for A/C conditions or outdoors in mosquito infested locations.

Formal wear

Currently for formal wear there are two outfits for him.

The suspenders outfit was his birthday look. I have used the tee and jeans from this outfit as separates too.

Other than that I bought him this romper that looks like a complete outfit on its own. Isn’t it the cutest thing you’ve seen?

There aren’t any social events coming up these next few months so I haven’t thought of buying anything more for him. I can always use the check shirts and jeans as an option too.

Socks and Shoes

On our recent trip to H&M we bought him two packs of organic cotton socks in white and blue. These should last the year.

In the shoes department, kept it simple with a white pair of sneakers. These can match all his outfits.

How do you style your toddler? Do you plan on setting up a capsule wardrobe too. Let me know how you went about it in the comments below.
