One snack I ate often during my childhood was doodh poha. After a long day at school and a walk back home in the hot sun I relished this bowl of chilled milk and poha that my grandma served. Doodh poha for me brings back memories of many such slow summer afternoons.
Traditional Doodh Poha Recipe
Doodh poha simply translates to milk and flattened rice. Poha is rice that is par boiled before flattening, which makes it easy to consume with very little or no cooking
Growing up doodh poha was a common every other day snack in our home.
It was made by mixing soaked poha (soak poha in a little water for about 5 minutes) in a bowl of milk, with some crushed cardamom and sugar.
When my grandma wanted to make doodh poha more interesting, she sometimes added cashews and saffron strands to the mix.

Another version of doodh poha is when you boil the milk and sugar together, transfer to the bowl and add soaked poha, saffron and cardamom powder to this. Mix well and have it as a hot kheer (porridge).
Doodh Poha Recipe In 3 New Ways
I love the traditional doodh poha recipe. Its simple, tasty and nostalgic. My son too enjoys doodh poha very much.
Since he loves it so much, I thought I need to try new variations so that I can increase the nutrient content of the meal and replace the added sugar with a healthier option like jaggery.
Note: Wash the poha before you add to the milk.
1. Nutty Doodh Poha
Soak 1/3 cup poha in 1/2 cup A2 cow milk for about 5-7 minutes.
Add 1 tsp jaggery powder, few raisins, and 1 tsp of homemade almond butter.
Mix it all up and enjoy!
2. Chikoo Doodh Poha
Soak 1/3 cup poha in 1/2 cup A2 cow milk for about 5-7 minutes.
Add 1 chopped chikoo, 1 tsp roasted flaxseed powder, and 1 tsp jaggery powder.
Mix and enjoy!
3. Chocolate strawberry doodh poha
In a mixer, make chocolate milk by blending 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder, A2 cow milk and 1 tsp jaggery powder.
Use this chocolate milk to build your doodh poha bowl. Add the poha and strawberry to the milk. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes.
Mix and enjoy!
All of these taste amazing when the milk is chilled.
These doodh poha recipes are so easy to make and packed with nutrients to get your child’s day started. You don’t need special cooking skills to fix yourself a yummy bowl of deliciousness.
